  • Project Title: Enhancing Surgeons' Operative Teaching: A Longitudinal Cohort Program
  • Summary: Operative teaching requires developing pedagogical skills that differ from those used in the classroom. To address this gap, we will design and implement a longitudinal, 9-month curriculum. One purpose of this longitudinal project is to develop skills in operative teaching and associated research to advance how surgical faculty prepare our learners in the operating room. A second purpose is to create a cadre of teachers across surgical disciplines to engage in this work together through a 9-month program. They will focus on problems they have in teaching, practice strategies, and explore how they can study the proposed strategies. We will apply AI to provide feedback during practice and for the design of potential studies. As a consequence, we will have faculty who can advance operative teaching in multiple departments. Being part of a cadre helps faculty exchange ideas with peers, which is key to sustained engagement. The program will allow those interested in education to interact with colleagues from other surgical disciplines, which does not naturally occur within our departmental structure.
